MacRitchie Reservoir Park and the TreeTop Walk

20 January 2018

Bren and I ventured to the MacRitchie Reservoir Park today to hike and explore the TreeTop Walk. The walk/hike to the TreeTop walk is a mix of pavement, boardwalks, and hiking trails through various terrains (from muddy wetlands, to humid rain forest).  The hiked around 5km round trip today, but we will definitely be back to hike some of the longer trails.  The free-standing suspension bridge connects the two highest points (Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang) in MacRitchie and offers a bird's eye view of the community of plants and animals that live in the forest canopy.  The total length of the walkway is about 250m and its height from the forest floor varies, with the high point at 25m.  The TreeTop walk also plays an important role in the forest canopy research.  It is an area that many researchers were not able to get into because of the lack of access.  Now the bridge helps to facilitate surveys and plant identification work and further the understanding of how forest ecosystems work.  It was a pretty neat place and because there was a high chance of rain to day it was relatively empty from foot traffic.  We also saw more monkeys (which I learned are long-tailed Macaque, a young pit viper snake, and a giant centipede!

Katie and I went downtown this evening for dinner and to see the Light to Night festival.
